Document Summary
Labeling theory: roots in symbolic interactionism (si, si translated into a theory of deviance --> labeling theory. It makes sense to look into labeling theory by looking at the symbolic interactionism. Si ideas: micro level, not just micro. There is nothing called "society" out there, what"s out there is me and you interacting with each other: racism is performed when we make judgements about somebody based on the colour of their skin. Interest in how society provides us a spot to look at ourselves. Or do that: reaction of a generalized audience. Applied to deviance: bare bones version of labeling theory, primary deviance --> labeling (societal reaction) --> internalization of deviant labels --> secondary deviance. Internalize the judgement and you behave in ways in which you now look at yourself. Secondary deviance: you are not in anyways normal within a society anymore. Two examples: "being sane in insane places" by david l. rosenhan.
