Document Summary
Social stratification is a society"s hierarchical ranking of people into social classes. Social class is based on both birth and achievements in life, while an individual"s position within the class structure is called his or her social status. Social stratification principles: first, all societies redistribute materials and social rewards to individuals. Because material resources are always in short supply, a stratified system ensures that those individuals who do more or are more capable receive more material wealth and social recognition. By rewarding deserving individuals, society allocates its limited resources to those who offer the greatest benefit to the whole. Ie: canadians recognize the tremendous dedication and talent that physicians and surgeons possess and therefore grant them relatively high material rewards as well as social recognition and profile. **social mobility is typically measured by comparing adult children"s status to that of their parents (called intergenerational mobility ),
