The social construction of difference: myth of race, historically, a race was a group of people who were physically and genetically distinguished from other groups. Social construction: historical legacy of colonialism and ethnocentrism, race is real as social category, racialization, describes the process of attributing complex characteristics to racial categories. Individuals advantage or disadvantage others because of their group membership: direct institutional discrimination. Institution employs policies or practices that are discriminatory against a person or group in that they deny that person or group a right or freedom. Indirect institutional discrimination: occurs when an action produces uneven results on a group or person because of an unlawful criterion but lacks the intent of being discriminatory. Aims to redress social inequalities of the past: symbolic interactionism, attitudes and perceptions are not innate, rather learned as a required component of culture or an expression of class conflict.
