Dialectics: a way of seeing history and society as the result of oppositions, contradictions and tensions from which social change can emerge. Idealism: human mind and consciousness are more important in understanding the human condition than is the material world. Human consciousness: an human interaction with the material world could change society. Class consciousness: an awareness on the part of the working class. The most detailed account of marx"s theory of history: he set out to reformulate the work of eminent german philosopher georg w. f. Hegel: hegel saw change as the motor of history, manx breaks decisively from hegel by insisting that it is material existence - not consciousness- that fuels historical change. Social classes - bourgeoise: those that own the means of production - proletariat: wage labourers who own no property which is capable of producing income, they only have their labour to sell. Lower middle class/petty bourgeoisie: small manufacturers, self-employed craft and trades people.
