Document Summary

Dominant paradigm: economic growth, dominating nature, science creates infinite resources, you dominate nature in order to create environment. Environmental paradigm: living in harmony with nature, respect it, the earth"s resrouces are finite they could run out and we need to do everything to save it. Examples: bp oil spill that lasted 87 days; largest accidental oil spill in history, fishing of blue fin tuna. Most people didn"t really care about this. The environmentalists were warning that this was close to extinction. They wanted to see the nationalists banning the fishing of these species: convention on international trade in endangered species. Japan sought and received the support of many other countries to ban the fishing of the blue tuna fishes. Environmental groups are arguing that fishes are going to be extinct: role of stakeholder groups. Clear business interests, environmentalists, various governments and scientists are all competing claims.
