Sex: biological understanding & dicotomous categories; focus on physical differences. Gender: social understanding & categories, focus on social meanings attached to being male or female; how gender constructs masculinity & femininity, gender roles. Transgendered: contested by many, individuals who depart from normative roles about men & women, change their gender by appearance, overlap with other labels (not same thing) historically: transsexual, crossdresser, drag queens, intersex. Private sphere of gender inequalities: violence against women, sociological perspective male violence against women is rooted in gender inequality, need to look at social structure & socialization. : gartner, dawson, crawford intimate femicide (women killed by intimate relationship: ex others) (63% of female murders were boyfriends, ex"s, husbands, risk factors, motives being estranged, relationship status, male power. Equal rights feminists fighting for voting, attend uni, economic independence, property right, legal rights for family law etc.
