What extent do our genes impact our identity. Socialization is the social process wherby people undergo development by interacting with the people around them . Social interaction is needed for: brain, intellectual, social, physical development (fine and gross motor development), etc. Being denied social interaction impairs children learning (as important as water, food and shelter) Historical & contemporary studies of feral (born without parents) and neglected children. Young girl strapped to a chair in a basement. A process that takes place from birth to death. A self-concept that develops in relation to others. Skill set built (physical, mental, emotional, social skills) Explicit learning (learn the rules of driving) vs. subtle/nuanced learning (social etiqute of driving-waving when a person gives you room to enter a lane) Parents, as well as media, have a strong influence in this stage. Occurs throughout adulthood (university, workplace and parenthood) Anticipatory socialization: involves taking on behaviours of social roles you have not yet accomplished.
