Religion is functional in meeting societal needs. Durkheim: pre-industrial society characterized by mechanical solidarity; industrial society characterized by organic solidarity. Durkheim believed that gods were social created, talked about collective counscious. Durkheim was interested in how society creates cohesion/solidarity. Increasing secularism, durkheim believed that society was in a moral crisis. Religion is a source of false consciousness for the working-class. Marx agreed with durkheim that religion was something that society created. Argued that religion was problematic b/c of its affect on the working class; prevents from revolting against economic elites. Conflict theorists talk about connections between religious leaders and economic elites. Being able to read and write was a tool needed to fight slavery.
