Cultural universals i. e. bodily adornment, sports, gift giving, social institutions (family) Ethnocentrism and cultural relativism: ethnocentrism: one"s own practices/beliefs are superior, cultural relativism: all cultural practices have equal value (not judging) Ideal vs real culture: a gap exists between what we say and what we do (ideology and action, example: environmentalism, consumption of alcohol. Globalization: political interconnectedness (i. e. un, economic interconnectedness (i. e. eu, free trade, travel and migration, transnationalism -- people who travel between two countries, communication, technology, work/occupations (ritzier: the mcdonaldization of society, write a lot about socialization, rationalization-, mcdonaldization -- Postmodernism: reflects broad range of projects, knowledge and "truth" is fluid and shaped and reshaped through discourse (i. e. , medical, political, academic discourse)
