Definitions are fluid and there is a lot of disagreement on them . Sex: biological understanding and dichotomous categories; focus on physiological differences: variables: chromosomal pattern, gonadal, hormonal, sex organs. Gender: social understanding and categories; focus on the social meanings attached to being male or female; how gender socialization constructs masculinity and femininity. Gender identity: a sense of biological, psychological and osical belonging to a particular sex. Gender roles: individuals learn to act in accordance with expectations about how members of their gender are supposed to behave: we learn these they are not innate, self esteem varies by gender and structural advantage. Self esteem is related to structural advantage or disadvantage (economic, political, social) Females tended to have lower self esteem than males. Groups that experience structural disadvantage they are more likely to experience lower self esteem because of the structure of disadvantage that leads to a lot of stressers.
