Definitions of families and marriage and implications. Families: definition of family shape government social policy and inform the decisions we make about how to live our lives. Patriarchy- social control of women by men. Family: site of potential conflict and male privilege. Limitations: patriarchy: not all men dominate women, aboriginals, women of coloured, older women, disabled women, lesbians. Look at the ways people create meaning. Much time of mothers are spent thinking about their babies. Limitations: focuses on micro level, de-emphasizes macro level things like social policy. Fluid gender roles (men and women are collectively doing things: over time gender roles become more rigid. Parents and children living in a crowded household. Gathered food: group"s daily food, needed for survival. Unpredictability of hunting meant women"s economic contributions were highly valuable. Groups can only settle where there is food. Pre industrial society family: households that are formed based on economic considerations and labour needs of the household.
