The development of the scientific method and purisms (spelling) The church loses a large amount of power. Colonialism and imperialism: colonizers seen themselves as bringing civilization to the uncivilized. Western ideas came into contact with non-western peoples in a systematic way. Forces led to the academic study of religion and the inherited bias. Towards last part of 19th century eastern religious studies became popular.
