In the west today, not many would endure such torture. This is an account of a woman having a tumor removed from her breast. In 1975, there was no anesthesia for surgery. Suffering is assessed as a vital sign in hospitals. Suffering is not global, nor universal; everyone experiences suffering in different forms and different degrees. Suffering is severe distress that interfered with one"s personhood. Ronald anderson: human suffering and quality of life. Suffering is distress from threat, major loss, or damage to one"s body and/or self-identity. He suggests that there are three types of suffering: Physical suffering (pain): agony, discomfort, excruciation, hurt, incapacitation, torture, torment, soreness, acute pain, chronic pain, extreme pain, excruciating pain, unimaginable pain. 1 self-worthlessness, spiritual confusion, purposelessness, other types of loss of meaning. Social suffering: social exclusion, discrimination, ostracized, persecution, incapacitation, disability, shame, distrust, relative deprivation, subjugation, atrocity, homelessness, unemployment, social rejections, discrimination, bullied, disability, blindness, deafness, bedridden, hunger, war, civil violence, survival ris factors.
