Clifford geertz: best definition, lots of work on religion, lived experience as meaningful not random. A way of understanding lived experience as meaningful: own experience. Attempt to transcend individual isolation: helps loneliness, allows to connect outside, break out of boundaries, spiritual and mental. Attempt to connect with human and other than human persons: human beings, non human being connection, spirt of the dead. Attempt to transcend mortality: understand life of overarching story that makes senses. Places of pilgrimage can go anywhere such as tims field: stadium at campus. Cathedrals, temples, mosques, sweat lodges; also tim horton"s field, roger"s centre. Look for religion outside the official places, texts, ritual specialists. Popular religion: anthropologist would say this, the way ordinary people find meaning in their lives. Lived religion: known as lived or popular region.
