Overlap between what we would consider religion, politics, economics, family life, etc. Refers to the broad range of interrelated religious and political duties all viewed as civic obligations. Piety and loyalty (eusebia) to the gods, the state, and the heads of the household strongly connected. Plutarch: fidelity to one"s husband means fidelity to his gods, and a wife is to shut the door tight on strange rituals and superstitions. From an ancient (elite amle) perspective, a wife who displayed disloyalty of this kind placed the entire household at risk. Legal terms: the authority of the male head of the household (paterfamilias) was conceived of largely in terms of property ownership; with his wife, children, slaves grouped together as things under his legal control. Paul"s description of phoebe reveals the influence of a fundamental pattern of interaction in the roman world; as roman women of means acted as patrons, benefactors.
