Relig st 1b06 - jan 21 - ritual and practice in christianity & islam. The council of trent (1545-1563) defining/clarifying the doctrine and structure of the church. Eastern orthodox accept these 7 but tend to have a broader view of the sacramental than catholics. Protestants accept only 2: baptism and eucharist, because they are understood to have been instituted by christ and have biblical warrant. Some groups (i. e. baptist) reject the idea of a sacrament but practice baptism and the eucharist as symbolic testaments to faith. All have sinned: catholics & protestants both believe that human nature is sinful/humans are born alienated from god. Reconciliation with god is possible for everyone: protestants: saved by grace through faith in christ, catholics: saved by grace through faith in christand by participating in the sacraments of the church. Christology: christianity adopts the messianism of judaism and applies and adapts, christ"s soteriological role is spoken of in different ways: it to jesus christ.
