Origins in the belief that over 2 millennia ago, the god yahweh entered into a covenant with biblical patriarch abraham. Pentateuch / torah refer to first 5 books of the hebrew bible (known as old testament in christianity) Israel formed as single nation under king david, jerusalem was capital israel split in 930 c. e into northern (israel/samaria) and southern (judah) kingdoms. Northern kingdom destroyed in 722 c. e israelites travelled to jerusalem to perform rites and make sacrifices to yahweh under supervision of priests at great jerusalem temple. 586 c. e jerusalem fell to the babylonians, temple was destroyed, majority of israelite ppl were deported to babylon, israel as a nation ceased to exist. Exile ended in 536 c. e. , israelites returned home and began to rebuild. homeland now controlled by persians. Prophet ezra supervised reconstruction of jerusalem temple.
