Hinduism, buddhism, and jainism, there are no distinct words for religion or philosophy. A term commonly used is darshana, which conjoins them. Darshana may most closely be translated as viewpoint, perspective, or worldview. A person"s darshana is therefore his or her most comprehensive understanding of reality. It is also the way in which one approaches the acquisition of understanding and how one seeks to gain wisdom about oneself and the world. The term encompasses what, in the west, one might designate as a religious or philosophical approach. Buddhism and jainism, are regarded as darshanas, but so are philosophical approaches such as logic and scienti c speculation.
