Desmond tutu: stated that the idea that there is no connection between religion and politics", was incorrect. There is a common idea that somehow the cultural spheres of religion and politics are separate: at odds with the many ways ion which religion is bound up by the systems of power. At the other end of this spectrum, is the thought that religions are only about the operation of power: expressed in the idea that religion is a means for those in power to remain in power. This was famously associated with the philosopher karl marx. Contemporary society was determined by economic relations: was based on the inequalities between those who controlled economic resources, and those who did not, marx used the phrase access to the means of production . Referring to the fact that control over material products, was the most significant social source for empowerment and disempowerment: to control the means of production is to have control over others.
