These emotions are self-conscious which involve the cortex. Emotional behaviour we tend to mold the behaviour of others. Layer of extrinsic motivation which comes from other people telling you what to do (most of it comes from family) Praise acts as a reinforcer (it rewards us) Involves smiling, cheers, clapping, verbal expression, tangible social rewards. Involves frowning and upturned nose, disgust expressions, verbal expression, shunning, demotion in rank. Embarrassment can be elicited by conspicuousness or scrutiny. Occurs in social environments where unwanted events threaten the person"s social image. Embarrassment is actively avoided, but adaptive in dealing with minor social transgressions. In experiments where the situation is manipulated and the experimenter acts embarrassed and does not. Subjects exposed to these gestures view embarrassed less harshly o: these are appeasement gesture >> this suggests roots deeper than human. People who show obvious embarrassment in an embarrassing situation are evaluated more favourably by observers than those who remain cool and poised.
