PSYCH 3GG3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Bigger, Stronger, Faster*, Evolutionary Psychology, Statistical Hypothesis Testing
Document Summary
Lecture 2 september 08: development is a result of an interaction between the child and the environment, by design. Guidance in terms of hypothesis testing: the number of possible hypotheses is essentially infinite, research resources are limited. Continuity - development that can be best described in quantitative terms, such as when a child gets bigger, stronger, faster or has a larger vocabulary: can be described in quantitative terms. Plasticity - functional changes that happen by design as a result of factors in the environment or the reallocation of neural resources that takes place following an injury. Stability - describes traits that do not show plasticity. These traits are not expected to change, at least after some early point in development. Normative development approach - researchers are interested in typical development. Individual differences approach - an approach to development that focusses on characterizing the ways in which development differs among children, and identifying factors that predict these individual differences.
