Adaptationism = investigating the components of organisms in the light of hypotheses about their adaptive functions. Tinbergen"s four modes of explanations: proximate causation (neurological), ontogeny (individual development), phylogeny (evolutionary development), functions. Women not on birth control pills rated men with dissimilar mhc (0-1 genes in common) as more attractive, those on the pill rated men with similar mhc (3-4 genes in common) as more attractive. Mates who share mhc alleles suffer fitness penalties, women on the pill are in an infertile psychophysiological state corresponding to pregnancy (similar mhc signals kin that will help pregnant women raise children) Men are more distressed when their partner engages in intercourse with someone else, women are more distressed when their partner develops an emotional attachment with someone else. Females can identify their offspring with greater reliability than males, natural selection favours preferential care for one"s offspring.
