Seldom see one on television or in movies. Purpose is to learn the truth, designed to elicit inculpatory information (confessions) Conducted only when investigator certain of suspect"s guilt. Notes only taken when suspect has told the truth: most police officers are not trained in appropriate interview techniques, appropriate interview techniques not often used in practice, a good interview makes terrible viewing. Good interview protocols: establish rapport with interviewee. More detail is required from interviewee than usual: report everything and hold no information back (even if it seems irrelevant, or assumes interviewer already knows it) Correct the interviewer if there is a misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Repeated questions do not mean that the first answer was wrong or inappropriate: use open-ended questioning.
