The first form of communication you should teach. Need to decide which form of communication you will use. Individual can learn new skills with minimal training. Shopping language using verbal imitation- break the word down. Goal is for the learner to be able to understand and respond to others. Often start by pairing instructions with a preferred item. Eg. responds to name and come here. Start teaching object (3d) then pictures (2d) Start with in context one step instructions then out of context. Start with identical and move to non identical. Once the learner has matching repertoire, you can begin to use visual prompts. A learner should have minimum of 5-10 mands before teaching tacts. Some responses under echoic or imitative control prior. Start with items the learner can mand. Need to be able to do it in other settings and materials. Teach things and use things that are realistic and have a purpose.
