Sexuality topic 7: love (wednesday, march 15th, 2016) Historically, love and marriage were thought of as separate entities. Throughout history, people who married for love were looked down upon. Ancient rome: the point of marriage was to produce children, make favourable alliances, keep up a bloodline. Passionate love is dangerous, a trap door leading to hell, not even to be condoned between husband and wife . Middle ages: love was meant to be chased a young knight would take on a quest to devote themselves with the unattainable, already married queen. Shakespeare: doomed love teenagers who love each other will die (romeo and juliet) Romantic era: love would be nice in a marriage relationship, but it is not necessary. Modern-day: cross-culturally, there is an emphasis on arranged marriage. Matching is about practical consideration, but it can have a component of love. In our culture, we see love and marriage as going hand in hand.
