Formal operations in everyday uses: understanding multiple meanings, metaphor and sarcasm. Vygotsky"s approach to cognitive development: role of social interactions in development, learning from those with more skills, proximal development: what one is ready to learn, scaffolding: appropriate supports for learning, rogoff: culture and apprenticeship in learning . The role of mental resources: ability to think about more things, ability to think about more kinds of things, executive control structures direct thinking, mental activities become more automatic, less effortful. How is intelligence measured: binet develops measures of future school success, binet"s test scored as mental age, figure 3. 3 normal distribution of iq scores. Iq: ratio of mental age to chronological age.
