PSYCH 2MP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: The Well-Tempered Clavier
Document Summary
Looking at cues that convey emotion which are structural. How some musical instruments convey emotions better than others. Challenge with this approach: the sounds that are being used are very simple, different from the emotionally moving types of music that we listen to outside of the lab. To have more complex music brought into lap, she brought music made by actual composers and altered it. In each segment played, there is the same melodic line in the beginning. The difference in the altered rhythm/: pitch structure stays the same but at a slower pace of movement. Results: when timing faster, things rated as happier and more graceful. Interested in the structural cues of how composers display emotion. Took major key pieces and minor key pieces and compared them. Challenge: difficult to get a balanced set of major and minor key pieces (because most music is in major)
