Lecture 42 family resemblance concepts / categories and definitions: Most of our knowledge (as we use it day to day) isn"t based on definitions rules: Definitions: a small set of necessary and sufficient conditions for deciding whether something belonds in the category some categories have definitions: triangle, prime number family resemblance: If you have these features, then you have x likelihood of belonging to category y. The probabilistic view: says there is no necessary conditions for belonging to a category (no sufficient definitions either, it is just a matter od degree", doesn"t mean that categories have no structure. Rules don"t exist for categories: not that we use rules unconsciously, even i they did exist, we do not know them. At best, we have an approximation that allows a beginner to get started. Rules cannot account for our expertise in namng and using things in the world. Evidence suggests that under most conditions ,we probably use both theories: prototypes.
