PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Hemispatial Neglect, Automaticity, Explicit Memory
Document Summary
Set of segments, shapes that make up letters and limited set of letters that make up words. Word recognition is often used in cognitive experiments- certain features guide letters ( g is curved- and those features make up words) Have to make reading a bit harder in order to measure effects- ex. Flash a real word followed by a strain of random letters. Tachistoscopic: shows stimulus for a controlled amount of time- before computers existed. Frequency: people are faster to recognize words that are seen more frequently than random made up words or even real words that are not used as frequently in our day ot day lives. The more frequent the word the faster we are to recognize= we measure how quickly the recognition threshold time. Can measure frequency in words/ million in print (ex. Word the occurs about 200 times/ million words)
