He means the world of phenomena the things that we see and experience it is everything that we are currently or potentially awareness or anything that is readily available to consciousness. The chair currently pressing on your bum which you were not thinking of but now are once mentioned. This is the world that people live in, our unique world. The things in the phenomenal field are the ones that contribute to growth. We need things to be in consciousness to be of any use to us. Maslow thought there were many motives but rogers says there is only one motive and that is the actualizing tendency. The tendency to grow and develop and be who we are. We have a built in compass called the organismic valuing process and it leads us to be drawn to opportunities for actualization and growth and reject situations that are inconsistent with this. Self are certain parts of the phenomenal field.
