None of these ideas were actually freud"s own ideas. We will look at motivation, the psychic structures, development and psychological processes. Motivation- why is it that people do what they do. Hedonism it means that the sole and total goal of humans is to seek pleasure. He said that the desire to seek pleasure and minimize unpleasure is guided by instinct. Freud contemplated this and he came up with the idea of thanatos which means death in greek. Recently this idea was shown in the washington post. These are the notions that he borrowed from biology. He also borrowed from physics and at the time the big idea of physics was thermodynamics and that means work is energy. And freud hypothesis that there was an energy source in the mind called the libido which was powered primarily by aggression (thanathos) and sexuality (eros). The implication is that these are the only reason that we do anything.
