He believed that you could not analyze personality on one level of abstraction. Acts: a behavior (moving your arm) or cognition. Habits: sometimes groups of acts are correlated together. Trait: a set of intercorrelated related habits, which in turn are correlated actions or thoughts. A trait is a dimension (we have a position along it) As we move from the top down we go from biological to behavioral. Our position along trait dimensions is strongly determined by biology and genetics trait things de ned by genetics put us in situations where through learning and experience we develop certain habits. Habits and acts are based on experience and learning. These genetic predispositions put us in certain situations. Not the same as jung who saw them as orientations. Low scores on these characteristics de ne the introversion end. Knowing ex/in tells you nothing about the neuroticism/emotional dimension. In the west we value extraversion above introversion.
