Child is verbal, can interact with the broader, social world. Now, will cathect libido to an external object (person) Will invest libido in something that is pleasurable. Will invest sexual libido in the primary caregiver, since they"ve given you the most pleasure (eg. mother, neighbour, etc. ) Desire is to have the mother all to himself and giving him pleasure. Amount of libido invested is proportional to the amount of care given by the mother. However, mom is investing time in someone else (dad). Therefore, wants to eliminate dad using an investment of aggressive libido. Dad is going to retaliate with castration cannot get rid of dad. Therefore, decathect sexual libido from mom and decathect aggressive libido from dad (rivalry with dad) If dad is rough, child will decathect more from mom and dad. Will now try to identify with dad (making part of you dad-like) because it will allow you to enjoy dad"s success with mom.
