Instinctoid, built in, they develop on a biological basis, but not as uncontrollable as animal instincts, we can modify, adjust, repress: develop in specific sequence, overdetermination, we choose to engage in behaviours that will fulfill multiple motives. Learn: aesthetic needs, need for beauty, artistic creativity. When we work to get these hierarchies we work in a specific way, decognition/ de perception: we actively seek out things that will fit those needs, narrowness of focus. Exceptions to hierarchy: reversal of what comes first, esteem comes before love and belonginess, cares how people think about him, recognition, respect, before he cares about love and belonginess. Satisfaction of constant lack: higher drives never appear. Individual never known what its like to have basic needs met, their higher drives never appear. Intrinsic growth of what is already in the organism: highest motive is to behave purely expressively.
