New name for disorder known for a while. Dsm 4 and dsm 3 there were 3 categories related to asd: autism, aspergers, rhetts syndrome, don"t exist anymore. Argument is that all the other disorders was a spectrum of problems. Some people are very high functioning yet still meet criteria for autism, and others are low functioning and do. Wanna think of intensity, duration, and disability. Autism received attention in last 25 years. First described by dr. leo kanner in 1943. Between kanner in 1943 and 1989, nearly 3000 articles published on autism, bten 1990-2004 (3700 published), nearly 3000 since 1994. Children and adolescents w/autism (and mental retardation) not aware they have disorder, able adolescents and adults are concerned about being described as disordered, or abnormal and prefer to see themselves as neurologically atypical. Some members of research community refer to autism spectrum condition rather than asd.
