Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. Episode not better explained by a schizophrenic or other psychotic mental disorder. There has never been a manic or hypomanic episode (not due to substance or other medical condition) Additional coding: single or recurrent episode, severity (mild, moderate, severe, with psychotic features) bipolar disorders in dsm- Both are virtually identical with one difference ^^ Cyclothymic disorder: cycling between elevated mood and depressive mood not as high as depression or mania, but the person tends to cycle in their moods lomoar cpsd| 2151316. Depression interspersed with periods of mania bipolar 1 however, it is defined on the bases of manic episodes. At least one week of expansive or irritable mood with increased energy or activity, most days, most of the day.
