PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 39: Ambidexterity, Delta Wave, Psychosis
Document Summary
More males than females: 1. 0/1. 0 2. 0/1. 0 male female ration, 2:1, there is considerable genetic overlap and asd, and asd is also more common in male, similarity in etiology not yet identified yet. The theories of schizophrenia are old and largely been disbanded. Reduction in brain size, there are some areas with more cells. Reduced brain asymmetry: more ambidexterity and sinistrality, more cases where we can find the speech center on the right centre of the brain, sinstrality left-handed. Cell atrophy or loss: hippocampus, limbic system, periventricular areas. Argument is: has something to do with infection: viral infection cns abnormalities, exposed to some infectious agent, and we know that they can cause abnormality in nervous systems which might lead to symptoms of schizophrenia. Viruses more common in winter: rubella, measles, flu. More viral antibodies in patients: higher in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting they have been overexposed to some infectious agent. Elevated interleukin-1 ; immune system response to inflammation.
