Less focus on neurochemistry in autism in being a neurodevelopmental disorder. Interest in dopaminergic systems: role of dopamine in movement problems, one of the characteristic is problem with movement control, dopamine enhancing systems have been involved in treatment in autism - not primary, dopamine-blocking agents in treatment. Autoimmune factors and autism: up to 25% of asd associated with autoimmune attacks on fetal brain, e. g. , hiv, aids. Saresella et al (2016): compared proinflammatory cytokines in asd, healthy siblings, healthy controls: more inflammatory cytokines in asd than others, reduced production of anti-inflammatory cytokine in asd, altered gi permeability in asd and healthy sibs. Jones et al (2016): compared mid-gestational cytokines, chemokines in moms of asd, Developmental delay, controls: moms of kids with asd+id had higher levels, moms of kids with asd only, or developmental delay had lower levels compared with controls, suggests separate etiology for asd+id and asd alone.
