Document Summary
History of adhd: first described in 1902 by dr. george still, now the most researched of all childhood disorders, name changes over the years: 1980s: attention deficit hyperactive disorder: dsm-iv and dsm-5 use adhd for all cases; three subtypes. Dsm-5 adhd specifiers: adhd-predominantly inattentive (adhd-pi, adhd-predominantly hyperactive and impulsive (adhd-phi, adhd-combined type (adhd-c) Incidence: the number of new cases of a disorder that have developed in a particular time period (typically 1 year: prevalence: how many cases there are or were during a particular time period. How many people already had the symptoms, not new cases. Assessing incidence and prevalence: cases per 100 population (%): using percentages, what percentage of the population has, or will have the disorder. Not good for low frequency disorders: cases per 10,000 population. Not good for high frequency disorders: clinical estimates. Leads to underestimate of frequency only measures the people who actually seek treatment, a lot of people don"t.
