Deficit in understanding mental states: deficiency of others states of knowledge or ignorance (understanding other peoples mental context, difficulty depicting pretense, deception, lying, jokes, irony and sarcasm nonliteral uses of language. The perception of faces and decoding of facial emotions many individuals have difficulty recognizing emotions on individual"s faces: cannot decode / recognize faces, can sort physical features but not emotions. Erp (evoked response pattern) differences between familiar and unfamiliar objects but. Different brain areas activated: typical individuals: frontal lobes, amygdala, lateral fusiform gyrus, autism: superior temporal gyrus. Ffa (fusiform face area) in superior temporal gyrus is usually activated in individuals without asd when processing faces: not activated in individuals with asd though. Says that there are patterns to the way in which peoples brains work: some people like things operating systematically, and others like things operating empathetically, systematisers: Recognizing / responding to the feelings of others. Autism = an extreme male brain (high level of systematizing)
