PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Social Rejection, Schizophrenia, Mental Disorder
Document Summary
It"s not the individual that"s wrong but the environment that they live in that is causing their symptoms, the maladaptive environment that they live in. Reduced popularity since 1980: lack of explanatory mechanisms, no obvious therapeutic implications, more conservative social climate. New epigenetic research suggests both mechanism and treatment- our understanding of genetics changed our thinking on the matter. High socioeconomic status (ses) at 2-3 years old, predicts better gene regulation of inflammation response in adolescent females. Effect not due to current ses, current stress or health practices. Effects not changed by later changes in ses. low early-like ses predicts pro-inflammatory phenotype in adolescence. Schreier & chen (2010): low childhood ses of parents predicts higher bp of their children in adolescence. Effect not due to current ses, current stress, or health practices. Parents" early-life ses predicts physiological functioning in their children.
