Obsessions: persistent, intrusive thoughts, urges, or images that cause anxiety or distress in most individuals, and that the individual tries to ignore, suppress or neutralize. Compulsions: repetitive behaviours or thoughts individual compelled to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rigid rules. Most common is hand washing organizing and ordering; ordering and structure represents some aspects of asd behaviour checking and rechecking counting. O/c take more than 1 hour a day or cause clinically signi cant impairment. Disturbance not better explained by symptoms of another mental disorder. Usually starts in adolescent, early adulthood (can begin in childhood) 10x more common in ocd than in population generally. 33% of ocd patients have mdd when evaluated. Ocd: fear conditioning to environmental event anxiety reducing behaviours reinforced; reinforced so occurs again and again. What about cases in which no prior conditioning can be identi ed. Dif culty dismissing mildly obsessive thought dif culty > more anxiety, causing more dif culty.
