PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture 2: Intro to Abnormal Psych
Document Summary
Retted et al (2009): meta-analysis of agreement between clinical diagnosis and research diagnosis. Agreement (kappa) low to moderate for most disorders. Samuel (2015): survey of studies comparing reliability of personality disorder diagnoses. Abnormality caused by physical problems in the brain. Psychological and mental disorder traced to a physical defect in the brain. Began with relationship between syphilis and mental symptoms. No physical problems in the brain and creates a mental defence against anxiety in an exaggerated way and must be dealt rationally (stressful, anxiety, etc. ) Symptoms impair social, occupational, or other domains functioning. Not all disturbances deserve to be merited as a mental disorder therefore labeling individuals becomes increasingly dif cult. Summary re criteria no clear line between normalcy and disorder. Abnormality based on agreement of psychologists and psychiatrists (judgement call and no criteria for accurate diagnosis) Pressures to include symptoms as disorders in dsm (often put in by teachers and parents for paid medical insurance)
