PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture 11: Lecture 11 - Media on Child Development
Document Summary
Effect of media on development is very controversial and political. Industries and companies in media create campaigns against their effects on child developments. Ethics does not allow thorough active laboratory studies. Provides children with vital education and improved development: ex. Sesame street was created particularly to prepare impoverished children for school. Found that he could develop effective programs to help impoverished kids, but hoped to widen his reach. Bumped into joan getz at a party, who helped him. Results: impoverished children who watched the show daily had larger vocabularies and were better prepared for schools than children who did not watch it as often. Lasted till teen years: significant, positive impact on cognitive and socio-emotional development. However, overall, there is a negative correlation between tv watching and school performance: kids that watch over 30 hours of tv a week tend to do poorer than those who watch tv less often.
