Mirror technique research - if babies touched the spot that was marked on them in a mirror, that provided evidence for self understanding - originally used in monkeys. You dont know the mark is being placed there, the whole point is to see if you notice/ understand it. Thought that by 2 children should see mark. Before age of 12 months - babies fail test. Self concept is well established by age 2. Self concept: attitudes, behaviours, and values that a person believes make himself or herself a unique individual middle to late childhood. Self understanding in early childhood: activities oriented. Central component of self hood in young children: concrete, physical and material, centered, unrealistically positive. Actual vs. ideal selves - think they are awesome - even if theyre not. Preferences, personality: decentered, spontaneous use of social references - comparing themselves to others often - describe themselves in terms of other people, more realistic.
