Document Summary

To what extent are sensory skills adult-like at birth and in infancy. Taste is very developed, whereas sight is not great, but good enough at birth. Pre-natal experience not much to see prenatally so we"re not stimulating our visual centres until we"re born; we can hear and taste prenatally. 20/20 vision, you can see at 20 feet away what average people can see at 20 feet. 20/100, you can see something at 20 feet away, but normal people can see it at 100 feet away. Babies have visual acuity of 20/200 to 20/400. Most infants have 20/20 vision by age 2. Babies don"t see much more than they have to see at birth; i. e. they see someone running at them, they can"t do anything anyway expect scream because they"re practically immobile. Fantz (1961) visual activity preference technique is a very useful technique for determining visual actuity. If babies prefer more complex display, they will have better visual acuity.
