There are different variations in smiling, depending on the stimulus involved: age 5-6 months facial expressions become more predictable, development of basic emotions, newborns. Only pleasure and distress: 2-3 mos. Joy and social smiling, sadness: 4-6 mos. Stranger wariness comes with person permanence at age 6 mos: 8-9 mos. All basic emotions: development of complex emotions, self-conscious emotions that involve feelings of success and failure.
