PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Pbs, Prosocial Behavior, Developmental Psychology
Document Summary
In the 1980s, rap was really rising in popularity: people started getting worried about their children listening to violent/upsetting lyrics, there was a committee that decided to put the parental advisory stickers on certain products. Based on the idea that we would cause permanent damage to children by them listening to violent/sexual lyrics. Is there research literature that tells us that violent media (tv, music, videogames, etc. ) is bad for children: there are issues in trying to discover this. You can"t tell parents that you want their child to watch a certain number of violent hours of media with the possibility that it might damage them. We have to deal with pre-existing groups rather than using random assignment. Which means that we have to use correlational studies, meaning that we cannot prove causation. There are issues with doing research for this.
