Children want to understand the world around them and they are uncomfortable if what they know doesn"t match the world around them: maturationist he believed that cognitive development occurred in a stage-like manner (mostly discontinuous) At certain stages in children"s lives, they would have a massive reorganization of how they understood the world around them.
