Unit 1: feature detectors: magno and parvo cells in reina transduce light simulus into a neural impulse, Magno cells are found in periphery of reina, and used for changes in brightness, moion and depth. Recorded electrical acivity of neurons in squid which started this research. Letvin et al"s then found it in the frog. Hubel and wiesel expanding on cats and monkey"s in order to be able to connect it to humans. Began by trying to learn what individual corital cells responded to. Put microelectrodes in the cortex of a cat to record the electrical acivity. They found that the neurons responded to more complex simuli with diferent orientaions and thickness. Simple cells: responds maximally to a bar of a certain length and orientaion in a certain region of the reina. Complex cells: responds maximally to a bar of a certain length and orientaion, regardless of where the bar is located within the recepive ield.
